Solana is a permissionless, high-throughput Layer-1 blockchain positioned as a programmable settlement network for tokenized assets, payments, and on-chain applications, engineered for low latency and high parallelism. Its core design combines Proof of History (a cryptographic clock) with stake-weighted validator consensus (Tower BFT / Proof-of-Stake), reducing coordination overhead and supporting rapid block production and execution at scale. Every transaction pays fees in SOL, and SOL holders can stake to validators to help secure the network and earn protocol rewards. Mainnet Beta was launched on March 16, 2020, and the roadmap has increasingly emphasized operational resilience—most notably via client diversity, including Firedancer, an independent validator client that is live on mainnet to mitigate single-implementation risk.
