Yakutsk is the capital of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), a key administrative, transport, trade and cultural center of the northeast of Russia.
The area of the urban district is 122 km2, the population is about 392 thousand people. The city is an important hub for the development of the northern territories: the Lena River is the main transport artery, and railway and air services are developing.
The economy is dominated by the fuel and energy complex, the food industry, diamond cutting and building materials. A significant part of the population is employed in trade and services.
Yakutsk is a major scientific center: the Yakutsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences operates here, and permafrost and natural and cultural features of the North are being studied.
Yakutsk is one of the leaders in terms of investment attractiveness in the Far Eastern Federal District.
