US-based power company AES began operations in the Dominican Republic in 1997. AES Dominicana is positioned as the principal investor Group with modern energy facilities, with the latest generation technology, and the most price-competitive array of fuels used in the generation of electricity in the Dominican market. This Group constitutes one of the principal supports for the National Interconnected Electrical System (NIES) suplplying around 40% of the countrys energy demand. AES Dominicana has two deep draft port infrastructures. The Liquid Natural Gas terminal, located in the AES Andres energy park, is the exclusive entry for natural gas into this country, while the Itabo International Port is the only port that receives coal and other types of bulk materials in Panamax size."
