Nepal is a landlocked South Asian country with Kathmandu as its capital. Nepali is the official language, and the Nepalese rupee (NPR) is the national currency. The economy is supported by remittances, tourism, agriculture, services, hydropower, construction, and trade.
The Nepal bonds market includes Treasury bills, development bonds, citizen savings bonds, foreign employment savings bonds, and corporate debt securities. Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) plays a central role in government securities issuance, settlement, and market administration.
The Nepal government bond market includes several categories of domestic government securities. Treasury bills are generally traded directly between market participants, while development bonds can be traded through the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE). Other savings-oriented government securities are distributed and traded through designated market makers and Nepal Rastra Bank mechanisms.
The corporate segment includes bonds issued by banks, financial institutions, hydropower companies, and other businesses. The Nepal Stock Exchange provides the country's principal organized securities-market infrastructure, supporting the development of Nepalese bonds.
For international investors, Nepalese government bonds provide exposure to a developing Himalayan economy. Remittances, tourism, hydropower development, banking-sector conditions, inflation, and external financing are key factors influencing the market. Nepal bonds therefore offer exposure to a small but developing domestic fixed-income market.
